What we’re seeing in the underwriting agency employment market

Australia’s underwriting agency sector continues to expand, driven by product innovation, capacity partnerships and ongoing demand for niche technical expertise.

Recruitment activity remains strong across key areas, including assistant underwriters, technical underwriters, product analysts, underwriting support, portfolio managers and claims specialists with agency experience.

While entry-level support roles are more accessible, mid-level underwriters and experienced technical specialists remain in short supply, particularly in specialty lines such as complex property, liability, financial lines, construction, motor, and emerging risk categories.

The agency model’s agility means many MGAs are scaling quickly, often requiring talent that can work autonomously, manage end-to-end portfolios and support growth mandates. This is contributing to increased competition for experienced underwriting professionals, as well as a growing reliance on highly skilled temps to manage seasonal peaks, capacity transitions and project-related uplift.
